Frequently

Asked

Questions

Can I hire my intern full time after their internship is up?

The J-1 visa is designed for the intern to return to their home country after their stay in the US.

How long does it take for the intern to get selected and start?

Your intern’s start date will be set for 2-3 month out from when you sign a contract with AIESEC.

Do I need to tax my intern?

J-1 interns and trainees are exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes. All other taxes should be deducted as normal.

Can I extend the length of the internship at all once the intern has arrived in the states?

Depending on the visa your intern is on the duration can be extended. J-1 Intern holders can be extended for up to 12 months and J-1 Trainee holders can be extended for up to 18 months.

Is the company responsible for finding housing/transportation for the intern?

The AIESEC office nearest you will assist your intern in finding ideal housing and securing transportation. Some host companies do opt to provide access to a company car or to intern housing. You should review additional benefits your host company wishes to provide with your local AIESEC office.

Do I have to file the intern under our company’s health insurance plan?

The fee you pay to AIESEC includes a health insurance package that will cover the intern during their stay. Thus you do not need to enroll the intern in your company’s plan. You may offer them the option to opt into your dental or vision plans, as these are not covered by AIESEC US.

What visa will my intern come to the US on?

Your intern will be sponsored on a J-1 Intern or J-1 Trainee visa. AIESEC US is a designated sponsor of both of these visa programs.
